Introduction:
Life feels like that sometimes—so many voices calling for our attention: career, money, social media fame, comfort, even good things like family and ministry. But what does God say is the principal thing?
I. The Priority of Wisdom
“Wisdom is the principal thing…”
-
Definition: Biblical wisdom is more than knowledge. It’s knowing how to live God’s truth in real life.
-
Solomon’s Emphasis: Out of all his teachings to his son, Solomon begins with this—put wisdom above all else.
-
Modern Relevance: We pursue education, wealth, even religion—yet many lack wisdom in choices, relationships, and decision-making.
Application: What is at the center of your pursuit right now? Is it God's wisdom, or something else?
II. The Pursuit of Wisdom
“…therefore get wisdom…”
-
Intentionality Required: Wisdom doesn’t just fall on us—we must get it. It requires effort, hunger, and humility.
-
How Do We Get It?
-
Through God’s Word (James 1:5, Psalm 119:130)
-
Through prayer
-
Through wise counsel and godly mentors
-
Through life experiences interpreted through God’s lens
-
Encouragement: The same God who gave Solomon wisdom promises it to those who ask (James 1:5).
III. The Companion of Wisdom: Understanding
“…and with all thy getting get understanding.”
-
Wisdom + Understanding: Wisdom is knowing what to do; understanding is knowing why and how to do it rightly.
-
Depth Over Surface: God wants us to grow not just in rule-following but in spiritual insight.
-
Practical Impact: Understanding helps us apply wisdom with grace, patience, and discernment.
Reflection: Are you just doing the right things, or do you understand God’s heart behind them?
