Title: The Search for Signs and Wisdom — A Reflection on 1 Corinthians 1:22
In 1 Corinthians 1:22, the Apostle Paul writes, "For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom." At first glance, this may seem like a simple historical observation. But if we look deeper, it reveals something profound about human nature — and about how God chooses to reveal Himself.
Two Cultures, Two Expectations
Paul was addressing the church in Corinth, a diverse and divided city that was heavily influenced by both Jewish and Greek cultures. The Jews had a long history of miracles — from the parting of the Red Sea to the manna in the wilderness. So, naturally, they expected the Messiah to come with powerful, undeniable signs. They wanted proof — something visible and extraordinary.
On the other hand, the Greeks loved philosophy and reason. They admired intellectual debates, logic, and the pursuit of knowledge. For them, truth had to make sense intellectually. They sought wisdom — something rational and enlightening.
Both groups were searching — one for signs, the other for wisdom. But neither were looking in the right direction.
God's Answer: Christ Crucified
In the very next verse, Paul says, "But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness" (v.23). Why? Because the cross didn’t fit into either expectation. A crucified Messiah? That seemed weak and shameful to the Jews. And to the Greeks, it was irrational and foolish.
Yet, it is through this very message — the message of the cross — that God chose to save the world. Not through spectacular signs or intellectual brilliance, but through the humility and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
What About Today?
Today, people still fall into these two categories. Some are looking for signs — miracles, supernatural experiences, emotional highs. Others are looking for wisdom — scientific proofs, logical arguments, and philosophical ideas.
But God still calls us back to the cross. His power is not in the spectacular, and His wisdom is not in human brilliance. His power is in love, His wisdom is in humility, and His greatest sign is Jesus Himself.
Conclusion: Look to the Cross
1 Corinthians 1:22 reminds us that while the world continues to demand signs or seek wisdom, the gospel offers something far deeper and more transforming — a Savior who gave His life for us.
So if you’re searching for answers, don’t just look for signs. Don’t just seek wisdom. Look to the cross. There, you will find both the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Pamagat: Ang Paghahanap ng Palatandaan at Karunungan — Isang Pagninilay sa 1 Corinto 1:22
"Sapagka't ang mga Judio ay nagsisihingi ng mga tanda, at ang mga Griego ay nagsisihanap ng karunungan."— 1 Corinto 1:22
Dalawang Kultura, Dalawang Pananaw
Sa talatang ito, ipinaliwanag ni Apostol Pablo ang ugali ng dalawang pangunahing grupo sa kanyang panahon. Ang mga Judio ay kilala sa kanilang kasaysayan ng mga himala — mula sa paghahati ng Dagat na Pula hanggang sa mana sa ilang. Kaya’t inaasahan nilang darating ang Mesiyas na may mga makapangyarihang tanda at kababalaghan. Nais nilang makakita muna bago maniwala.
Samantala, ang mga Griego (o Griyego) ay nahuhumaling sa pilosopiya at katalinuhan. Hinahangaan nila ang mga debateng intelektwal, lohika, at kaalaman. Para sa kanila, ang katotohanan ay kailangang makatuwiran at kapanipaniwala.
Parehong naghahanap ang mga grupong ito — ang isa ng palatandaan, ang isa ng karunungan — ngunit pareho silang hindi nakita ang sagot ng Diyos.
Ang Sagot ng Diyos: Si Cristo na Ipinako sa Krus
Sa sumunod na talata, sinabi ni Pablo:
“Nguni’t kami ay nangangaral ng Cristo na ipinako sa krus, na sa mga Judio ay katitisuran, at sa mga Griego ay kamangmangan.” (1 Corinto 1:23)
Ang mensahe ng krus ay hindi tugma sa inaasahan ng alinmang grupo. Para sa mga Judio, ito’y kahinaan — paanong ang isang Mesiyas ay mamamatay sa kahihiyan? Para sa mga Griego, ito’y kahangalan — hindi ito makatwiran o matalino ayon sa kanilang pamantayan.
Ngunit sa kabila ng lahat ng ito, ang mensahe ng krus ang siyang kapangyarihan at karunungan ng Diyos. Isang paanyaya ng pag-ibig, pagpapakumbaba, at kaligtasan.
Paano Ito Nauugnay sa Panahon Natin?
Hanggang ngayon, marami pa rin ang naghahanap ng “tanda” — mga himala, emosyonal na karanasan, o kababalaghan. Mayroon ding patuloy na naghahanap ng “karunungan” — siyentipikong patunay, lohikal na paliwanag, o pilosopikal na sagot.
Ngunit ang Diyos ay patuloy na nagtuturo sa atin tungo sa krus ni Cristo. Doon Niya ipinakita ang Kanyang tunay na kapangyarihan — sa pamamagitan ng sakripisyo, hindi sa pagyayabang. Sa pamamagitan ng pag-ibig, hindi sa takot.
Pagninilay: Tumingin sa Krus
Ang 1 Corinto 1:22 ay paalala sa atin na hindi palaging ang inaasahan ng mundo ang sagot ng Diyos. Ang tunay na tanda ng Diyos ay si Jesucristo mismo, at ang tunay na karunungan ay ang Ebanghelyo ng krus.
Kaya kung ikaw ay naghahanap ng sagot, himala, o paliwanag — tumingin ka sa krus. Doon mo matatagpuan ang tunay na buhay, kapangyarihan, at karunungan ng Diyos.
