You Are Children of the Most High
Reflections on Psalm 82:6
In the heart of the Old Testament lies a striking and often misunderstood verse: "Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the Most High." At first glance, this verse may seem puzzling—how can human beings be called "gods"? What does it mean to be a child of the Most High?
To understand this powerful declaration, we must look at both the context and the calling that surrounds it.
The Context: Earthly Judges, Divine Responsibility
Psalm 82 is a psalm of Asaph, where God stands in the divine assembly and brings judgment upon unjust leaders—those entrusted with earthly authority. When God says, “Ye are gods,” He is speaking to human rulers and judges who were appointed to execute justice on His behalf. In ancient Israel, judges were often referred to as "elohim" (gods) because they carried out God's law and were to reflect His character in their leadership.
These leaders, however, had failed. They were showing partiality, neglecting the oppressed, and corrupting justice. Though they were given high status and divine responsibility, God reminds them in verse 7: “But ye shall die like men…” In other words, their position would not protect them from judgment.
The Privilege: Children of the Most High
The second part of the verse gives us something deeply meaningful: “all of you are children of the Most High.” This is not just for rulers and judges; this is a spiritual identity that belongs to all who walk in covenant with God.
To be a child of the Most High is to walk in intimate relationship with the Creator of the universe. It is a position of honor, responsibility, and purpose. In the New Testament, this truth is expanded and personalized: “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26).
The Challenge: Reflecting God's Character
With identity comes responsibility. Just as the judges in Psalm 82 were expected to reflect God’s justice, we, too, are called to represent God in this world—not by title, but by action.
To be a child of God means:
-
Living with integrity
-
Loving our neighbors
-
Standing for truth
-
Serving with humility
Jesus echoed this when He said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
The Hope: Authority in Christ
Interestingly, Jesus Himself quoted Psalm 82:6 in John 10:34–36 when defending His divinity. If mere human judges could be called "gods" because of their divine commission, how much more the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world?
Today, through Jesus Christ, believers are not only called children of God—we are empowered as ambassadors of His Kingdom. We carry His presence, His truth, and His love wherever we go.
Final Thoughts
Psalm 82:6 reminds us of two things:
-
Our identity as children of the Most High is sacred and powerful.
-
Our responsibility to live justly, walk humbly, and reflect the heart of God is essential.
Let us never forget that our worth does not come from earthly titles, but from the One who calls us His own. As children of the Most High, we are called to shine, serve, and stand strong—until the whole world sees the glory of our Father through us.
Have you embraced your identity as a child of the Most High today? Live it. Walk in it. Shine with it.
BE BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE!
