OBEDIENCE WITH DISCERMENT

by Chris N. Braza

 1. Romans 13:1–2 (ESV)

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”

This teaches submission to government, even when the leaders are not ideal, because God allows them to rule.

 2. 1 Peter 2:13–14 (ESV)

“Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil…”

Peter wrote this during the time of corrupt Roman emperors, yet still emphasized respect for authority.

πŸ›‘ BUT: There is a biblical limit to obedience.

πŸ“– 3. Acts 5:29 (ESV)

“We must obey God rather than men.”

When human laws contradict God’s laws, believers are to follow God even if it means civil disobedience.

 Summary:

  • The Bible teaches respect and submission to government authorities, even when they are imperfect (Romans 13, 1 Peter 2).

  • However, when the law is unjust and contradicts God's commands, Christians are called to obey God over man (Acts 5:29).

  • We do not owe blind obedience to laws that are unreasonable, immoral, or ungodly.
