How to approach God in prayer?

Both the broken spirit Hannah had in 1 Samuel 1 and the confidence described in the New Testament are actually two sides of the same coin in effective prayer.

Here’s the balance:

1. Hannah’s Broken Spirit (1 Samuel 1:10–20)

  • Meaning: She came before God in humility, deep honesty, and total dependence.

  • Why it worked: God “is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). True prayer isn’t about pretending we’re fine; it’s about laying our real burdens before Him.

  • Lesson: Brokenness removes pride, self-reliance, and pretension.

2. New Testament Confidence (Hebrews 4:16, 1 John 5:14)

  • Meaning: Because of Jesus, we can approach God’s throne boldly—not arrogantly, but with assurance that we are accepted.

  • Why it works: Faith in Christ removes the barrier of sin, giving us access to God’s presence without fear of rejection.

  • Lesson: Confidence rests on God’s promises, not our worthiness.

How the Two Work Together

Prayer that truly “works” often has both:

  1. A humble heart (knowing we don’t deserve it on our own).

  2. Faith-filled boldness (knowing Jesus made the way open for us).

Think of it like this:

  • Brokenness is the attitude toward ourselves — “Lord, I need You, I can’t do this.”

  • Confidence is the attitude toward God — “Lord, You can, and You promised You would hear.”

 Biblical Blend:

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6–7)

Here, humility and trust operate together — and that’s the posture God responds to.
