LAW AND THE BIBLE: WOE TO THOSE WHO MAKE UNJUST LAWS THAT OPPRESS THE POOR
(Based on Isaiah 10:1–2)
Throughout human history, the law has been regarded as the foundation of order and justice. Its purpose is to protect the rights of every person, especially the poor, the weak, and the voiceless. However, in many cases, the very laws that are meant to ensure justice become instruments of oppression, self-interest, and corruption.
The Bible speaks strongly against such injustice. In Isaiah 10:1–2, God declares:
“Woe to those who make unjust laws,to those who issue oppressive decrees,to deprive the poor of their rightsand withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.”
These words are not only for ancient Israel but remain relevant in our present time. Instead of serving as a shield of fairness, the law is sometimes used by the powerful to protect their own interests. The poor continue to suffer under policies that favor the wealthy, taxes that burden the lowly, and systems that deny them equal access to justice.
Yet the Word of God reminds us that true justice comes from Him, not from man. His divine law is founded on love, mercy, and righteousness. Therefore, every leader, lawmaker, teacher, or public servant carries the responsibility to reflect God’s justice in their decisions and actions. True leadership is not about power or prestige—it is about service and compassion.
Indeed, woe to those who make laws that oppress the poor, for they not only dishonor humanity but also rebel against the very heart of God, who defends the weak and the afflicted. But blessed are those who use their authority and influence to protect, uplift, and restore others, for they walk in the light of God’s truth.
Reflection:
Every law should reflect the heart of God. If it promotes love, justice, and mercy, it aligns with His will. But if it brings oppression, inequality, and pride, it stands against His righteousness.

BATAS AT BIBLIYA: Kaawa-awa Kayong Gumagawa ng Batas na Sumisiil sa mga Mahihirap
(Batay sa Isaias 10:1-2)
Sa kasaysayan ng sangkatauhan, ang batas ay itinuturing na gabay ng kaayusan at katarungan. Ang layunin nito ay pangalagaan ang karapatan ng bawat isa, lalo na ang mga mahihirap, mahihina, at walang kakayahang ipagtanggol ang sarili. Subalit sa maraming pagkakataon, ang mismong batas na dapat magbigay ng hustisya ay nagiging kasangkapan ng pang-aapi at kasakiman.
Ang Biblia ay mariing nagsasalita laban sa ganitong uri ng kawalang-katarungan. Sa Isaias 10:1-2, malinaw ang pahayag ng Diyos:
“Kaawa-awa kayong gumagawa ng mga batas na hindi makatarungan, at naglalabas ng mga pasiya na pumipinsala sa mahihirap. Inaalis ninyo sa kanila ang kanilang karapatan at inagawan pa ninyo ng katarungan ang mga ulila at mga balo.”
Ang mga salitang ito ay sumasalamin hindi lamang sa panahon ni Isaias kundi maging sa ating kasalukuyang lipunan. Sa halip na magsilbi ang batas bilang proteksyon ng tao, ito ay nagiging baluti ng mga makapangyarihan upang panatilihin ang kanilang kapangyarihan. Maraming mahihirap ang nagiging biktima ng mga sistemang hindi patas — mga patakarang pabor sa mayayaman, mga buwis na pabigat, at mga serbisyong hindi abot ng masa.
Ngunit sa kabila nito, ipinapaalala ng Biblia na ang tunay na katuwiran ay nagmumula sa Diyos, hindi sa tao. Ang Kanyang batas ay batay sa pag-ibig, awa, at katarungan. Kaya’t ang bawat mambabatas, pinuno, guro, o lider ay may tungkuling magsilbing daluyan ng Kanyang katuwiran. Ang tunay na pamumuno ay hindi nakabatay sa kapangyarihan, kundi sa paglilingkod.
Tunay ngang kaawa-awa ang mga gumagawa ng batas na sumisiil sa mahihirap — sapagkat hindi lamang nila nilalapastangan ang tao, kundi pati ang Diyos na nagtatanggol sa kanila. Ngunit mapalad naman ang mga gumagamit ng batas upang magtanggol, mag-angat, at magtuwid ng baluktot, sapagkat sila ang tinatawag ng Biblia na “mga anak ng liwanag.”
Pagninilay:
Ang bawat batas ay dapat sumasalamin sa puso ng Diyos. Kung ang layunin nito ay pagmamahal, katarungan, at awa — ito ay maka-Diyos. Ngunit kung ito’y nagpapahirap, nagsasamantala, at nagbubulag sa katotohanan — ito ay laban sa Kalooban ng Diyos.
