Prayer, Declaration, and Decreeing: Understanding the Power and the Balance

By Chris N. Braza, Soul Care Ministry

In many Christian gatherings today, we often hear powerful words like “I declare!” or “I decree!” spoken with confidence and passion. These expressions inspire faith and hope. Yet as believers, it is important to understand how prayer, declaration, and decreeing truly work according to God’s Word.

When we understand them correctly, they become powerful tools for spiritual growth. When misunderstood, however, they can lead us away from the humility and dependence that God desires.

Let us look at them carefully.

1. Prayer: Our Humble Conversation with God

Prayer is the foundation of every believer’s spiritual life.

It is not merely asking God for things. Prayer is a relationship. It is the moment when a child speaks with his Father.

In prayer, we acknowledge that God is sovereign and we are dependent on Him.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this in His prayer:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

This shows us that prayer is not about forcing heaven to obey our wishes. It is about aligning our hearts with God's will.

2. Declaration: Speaking God’s Truth in Faith

A declaration is different from prayer. While prayer speaks to God, declaration speaks the truth of God’s Word into our lives and situations.

For example, when a believer says:

  • “The Lord is my shepherd.”

  • “God is my refuge and strength.”

These are declarations of faith rooted in Scripture.

Declarations strengthen our faith because we remind ourselves of God’s promises.

3. Decreeing: Speaking Under God's Authority

The word decree often sounds powerful, like a king issuing an order. In Scripture, decrees were given by kings who had authority.

As believers, we must remember something important:

We do not decree independently from God.

Any spiritual authority we have flows from our submission to Christ.

Therefore, when believers say “I decree”, it should not mean commanding the universe. Rather, it means standing firmly on what God has already spoken.

4. The Right Order: Prayer First

Here is the healthy spiritual order:

  1. Prayer – We seek God's will.

  2. Declaration – We speak God's promises.

  3. Decree (in faith) – We stand firmly on God's authority.

When we reverse this order, we risk making faith about our own power rather than God's grace.

But when prayer comes first, everything else becomes aligned with heaven.

5. The Heart Behind the Words

God is not impressed by loud voices or dramatic statements. What moves heaven is a sincere heart.

Sometimes the most powerful prayer is simply:

“Lord, I trust You.”

Final Thought

Prayer keeps us humble.
Declaration keeps us faithful to God’s promises.
Decreeing reminds us to stand firmly in God’s authority.

When these three are properly understood, our spiritual life becomes balanced, strong, and deeply rooted in Christ.

And in the end, the greatest declaration any believer can make is this:

“Ang Diyos ang may huling salita sa aking buhay.”
God has the final word over my life.
