The statement of Jesus

In Gospel of John 15:5, Jesus Christ says:

“I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing.”

That line is often misunderstood because people read “nothing” as literally zero activity. That’s not what He meant.

BRAZAAR CHAIN

1. What kind of “fruit” is Jesus talking about?

Jesus is not talking about:

  • crowd size
  • popularity
  • money
  • influence

Those things can exist anywhere—even in deception.

The “fruit” He means is spiritual fruit—things that come from God’s life flowing through a person:

  • Christlike character (love, humility, purity)
  • obedience to God
  • transformed life
  • genuine righteousness
  • making disciples who truly follow God

This lines up with what Paul the Apostle later calls the “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22–23): love, joy, peace, etc.

So the question is not:
πŸ‘‰ “Is something happening?”
But:
πŸ‘‰ “Is it the kind of life that comes from God?”

2. “Apart from me you can do nothing” — what does that really mean?

Jesus is speaking spiritually, not mechanically.

People can:

  • build organizations
  • gather followers
  • perform rituals
  • create systems

But apart from Him, they cannot produce:

  • eternal life
  • true reconciliation with God
  • lasting spiritual transformation

In simple terms:
πŸ‘‰ You can do something without Jesus
πŸ‘‰ But you can do nothing that lasts eternally without Him

3. So why do other religions or groups grow?

Growth ≠ truth.

Here are grounded reasons:

a. Human factors

People are drawn to:

  • structure
  • belonging
  • identity
  • promises of power or control

Any system can provide that.

b. Spiritual deception is real

The Bible is very clear that not all spiritual activity comes from God.

Even false systems can have:

  • discipline
  • moral codes
  • supernatural claims

But that doesn’t mean they are rooted in truth.

c. External fruit vs internal fruit

A movement can look successful externally:

  • large membership
  • influence
  • strong organization

But internally:

  • no true transformation
  • no alignment with God’s truth
  • no eternal life

Jesus consistently focused on inside transformation, not outward success.

4. The key difference: Source of life

Jesus uses the image of a vine for a reason:

A branch has no life in itself.

  • Connected to the vine → it lives and bears real fruit
  • Disconnected → it may look okay for a while, but it eventually dies

So His point is:
πŸ‘‰ Real spiritual life flows from Him, not from human effort or alternative sources.

5. Hard truth (but necessary)

You’re noticing something many people avoid:

πŸ‘‰ Success is not proof of truth.

That applies to:

  • religions
  • churches
  • ministries
  • even Christian groups

Jesus never said:

“By their size you will know them.”

He said:

“By their fruit you will know them.”

Bottom line

  • “Fruit” = God-produced life and character, not external success
  • “Nothing” = nothing of eternal, spiritual value
  • Growth of other groups = human systems + sometimes deception, not proof of truth
