"For in Him we live and move and have our being." — Acts 17:28 (NKJV)
There is a dangerous illusion that many people live under today—the belief that life is self-sustained. We wake up, make our plans, build our careers, pursue our dreams, and assume that tomorrow is guaranteed. Yet Scripture reminds us of a profound reality: our existence is not independent of God. Every heartbeat, every breath, every step we take is possible only because He continuously sustains us.
When the Apostle Paul stood before the philosophers in Athens, he did not begin by arguing religion. Instead, he pointed them to the very foundation of existence itself. He declared, "In Him we live and move and have our being." Paul was proclaiming that God is not merely the Creator who started the universe and stepped away. He is the ever-present Sustainer who holds all creation together every moment of every day.
This verse dismantles human pride. Your intelligence is a gift. Your strength is borrowed. Your opportunities are granted by grace. Even the ability to seek God is made possible because He first gives you life. Without Him, there is no movement. Without Him, there is no purpose. Without Him, there is no existence.
Life Is More Than Existing
Many people are alive biologically but dead spiritually. They possess wealth but lack peace. They enjoy success but feel empty inside. Why? Because life separated from its Source becomes meaningless.
A fish cannot survive outside water because water is its environment. Likewise, humanity cannot truly flourish apart from God because He is the atmosphere for which our souls were created.
We often ask God to bless our plans, while neglecting the One who gives us the ability to plan. We pursue temporary achievements while ignoring eternal purpose. The tragedy is not merely dying without God—it is living every day disconnected from Him.
In Him We Live
Every sunrise is evidence of God's sustaining mercy.
Your heart continues to beat because He permits it.
Your lungs continue to breathe because He commands them.
Your mind continues to function because He preserves it.
Life is not earned; it is received.
Every new morning is an invitation to recognize God's faithfulness.
In Him We Move
Movement speaks of progress, purpose, and direction.
God never intended His children to remain stagnant. He calls us to grow in faith, mature in character, and advance in His purpose. Every opportunity, every divine appointment, every open door is orchestrated by His sovereign hand.
Sometimes we think we are directing our own paths, only to discover later that God had been guiding every step all along.
Even delays are often divine preparations.
Even closed doors become acts of protection.
Even painful seasons become classrooms where faith is strengthened.
Nothing moves outside God's sovereign awareness.
In Him We Have Our Being
This is perhaps the deepest statement of all.
Our identity is not found in our profession.
Not in our possessions.
Not in our achievements.
Not even in the opinions of people.
Our true identity is found in Christ.
The world asks, "What do you do?"
God asks, "Whose are you?"
When you discover your identity in Him, fear loses its grip. Rejection no longer defines you. Failure no longer destroys you. Success no longer controls you. Your worth rests securely in the One who created and redeemed you.
A Call to Return
Perhaps you have been trying to carry life on your own.
Perhaps anxiety has stolen your joy.
Perhaps disappointment has weakened your faith.
Remember this truth:
You were never created to live independently from God.
The One who gave you life also desires to guide your life.
Return to Him.
Walk with Him.
Depend on Him.
For apart from Him, life becomes survival.
But in Him, life becomes abundant.
Reflection
Every breath you take is a silent testimony that God has not finished with you yet.
If He continues to sustain your life, He still has a purpose for your life.
Stop striving to be the source of your own strength.
Rest in the One who has always carried you.
For truly—
In Him we live.
In Him we move.
In Him we have our being.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sustaining my life every moment. Forgive me for the times I have lived as though I were independent of You. Help me to remember that every breath is a gift and every step depends on Your grace. Teach me to find my identity, purpose, and security in Christ alone. Lead me each day according to Your will, so that my life may bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
